Hazardous Chemical Leak Prompts Evacuation in Ohio

(MENAFN) Authorities ordered residents to evacuate an area surrounding an industrial site in Toledo, Ohio, after a hazardous materials release prompted an emergency response late Tuesday night.

The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department instructed people living within a 1.6-kilometer (1-mile) radius of the affected location to leave immediately. The incident began at 10:48 p.m. local time Tuesday (0248 GMT Wednesday) near Enterprise Boulevard and Progress Avenue.

The leak occurred at the Sterling Pipe and Tube facility, which was evacuated as emergency crews responded to the situation, according to department spokesperson Pvt. Sheldon Collins, as reported by local media.

Officials confirmed that no injuries or fatalities had been reported and ruled out an explosion at the site. However, the substance responsible for the release had not yet been identified as specialized hazardous materials teams continued monitoring conditions throughout the night.

As a precaution, emergency officials also advised people in the surrounding area to remain indoors where instructed, keep windows and doors closed, and switch off ventilation systems that draw air from outside. These measures were intended to limit potential exposure while specialists assessed the nature and extent of the leak.

The evacuation order affected the Raintree Village and Alexis Addition neighborhoods, according to the city. Residents within the designated perimeter were urged to follow emergency instructions while authorities worked to manage the incident and determine when it would be safe to return.

Local officials arranged temporary accommodation for displaced residents at Shoreland Elementary School. Meanwhile, the Red Cross and public transportation buses gathered in a nearby parking lot on Alexis Road to provide assistance and support evacuation efforts.

Emergency services continued their response at the industrial facility as officials sought to identify the released chemical and evaluate any risks to nearby communities. Authorities had not announced when the evacuation order would be lifted.
